Abstract
What if students choose to use generative AI: 3-year teaching reflection
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) platforms (i.e. ChatGPT) can be a useful tool for teaching and learning, but they could bring some challenges in classrooms. In this seminar, I will offer my three-year reflection on my experience teaching two disciplinary undergraduate courses, where I allow students to use AI in their work. Over three years, I’ve observed and encountered several diverse student AI use cases, ranging from undisclosed AI usage to poorly executed AI-generated submissions. I’ll share real cases and reflections on navigating these situations; specifically, this reflection could include how to address quality issues, foster transparency, and manage grading dilemmas. Instead of focusing on theories, my session expands theory and presents actionable insights for educators facing similar scenarios. I hope to encourage a collective dialogue on the practical realities of GAI in education.

Speaker Biography
Daniel Chang is a Lecturer in Education at Simon Fraser University. His scholarship combines composition studies, argumentation, multilingual student instruction, and instructional design and technology. His primary interest lies in exploring how AI can serve as a tool to support students in developing self-regulated learning skills.
